No one knew who Gustafsson was going into UFC 165 on September 21st, 2013. Joe Rogan in the promotions said how it could be Jones' toughest fight to date. When a dominant champion is fighting, everybody says the challenger could give the champion a tough fight and often times the champion comes out and destroys the challenger. That was the case for Jones up and till that night.

Some people even believed Gustafsson won that fight. That's how close it was.
Jones vs. Gustafsson is going to happen one way or another but it isn't completely official for UFC 177 on August 30th. Only Gustafsson has signed for the fight, they are still working on Jones. That likely won't be an issue, though.
UFC 177 takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Garden Arena on August 30th, 2014. No other bouts for this event has been announced.
