Lyoto Machida wants a rematch against Jon Jones but I don't think it will happen anytime soon.
Even though Machida is fighting Chris Weidman for the Middleweight title on May 24 at UFC 173 he has told Jon Anik that he still wants a rematch with Light Heavyweight Champion, Jon Jones.
Machida does not want to go back to 205 pounds, he has enjoyed fighting in Middleweight.
Machida lost to Jon Jones at UFC 140, and a rematch was planned but because of injury was scrapped. From then on Machida was not in title contention and a rematch never happened.
Now, Lyoto feels Jones would accept a rematch because he is a top contender once again (just in a different weight class).
Although, I feel the rematch if it does happen it won't for a while.
Jon Jones is currently booked to fight Glover Teixeira at UFC 172 and Lyoto Machida is fighting Chris Weidman hoping to be one of the few people to have been champions in 2 weight classes. Alexander Gustafsson is already fighting the winner of Jones vs. Teixeira and Vitor Belfort is fighting the winner of Weidman vs. Machida.
Then there is Jacare Souza and Daniel Cormier who are close to a title shot in their respective weight divisions.
If Machida becomes the Middleweight champ and Jones defends his belt successfully, both fighters are booked for a while.
Especially if Machida does not want to move up to 205, I don't see the superfight happening anytime soon. It may be talked about a lot like most superfights but if it does happen, that's why I don't see it happening soon.
Unless Cormier and Souza for some reason don't fight the winners of Gustafsson and the LHW Champ and Belfort and the MW weight champ, that's the only way it would happen soon.
Time will tell!
Nick
