Overeem is coming off of a decision victory over Frank Mir at UFC 169. Before that, Overeem had 2 TKO losses to Antonio 'Bigfoot' Silva and Travis Browne. If he lost at UFC 169 he would have been at risk of losing his job.

Overeem debuted in the UFC in December 2011 and knocked out Former Champion Brock Lesnar. Following that win, Overeem was planning to fight then Champion Junior dos Santos for the Heavyweight strap. Unfortunately, his drug tests came back positive and he received a 9 month suspension.

Overeem underwent elbow surgery earlier this year and is currently recovering. This surgery was the first surgery of his MMA career.
He has fought in Japan in the past and would like to fight on the Japan card in September. The UFC is scheduled to go to Saitama, Japan on September 20th for UFC Fight Night 51.
There are several injured Heavyweights that could possibly be ready to go by September and serve as the opponent for Overeem. Junior dos Santos was scheduled to fight Stipe Miocic at the TUF Brazil 3 Finale this Saturday, but Dos Santos had to pull out of the bout with a hand injury.
A win over Dos Santos for Overeem would definitely put 'The Reem' back into title contention.
Other possible opponents for him are Travis Browne, Bigfoot Silva and Josh Barnett.
