3-time UFC title challenger in the Middleweight and Light Heavyweight division, Chael Sonnen has officially announced his retirement from competitive mixed-martial arts and the UFC. The announcement was made on tonight's episode of UFC Tonight, where Sonnen is the co-host.
The public recently became aware that Sonnen failed the same random drug test by the NSAC (Nevada State Athletic Commission), the same one Wanderlei Silva refused to take. The drugs he tested positive for are banned in NSAC, although they were helping with taking fertility medication and getting off TRT. Sonnen said he takes full responsibility for the failed drug test.
He was originally slated to fight Wanderlei Silva at UFC 175 following the two fighters being opposing coaches on TUF Brazil 3 which aired exclusively on Fight Pass. Silva was taken off of the card after he refused to take the drug test, and afterwards Vitor Belfort stepped in to fight Sonnen.
The fight has been taken off of the card due to not being able to find an opponent for Belfort, as Sonnen was taken off of the card.
Sonnen made it clear he would rather be a father who could raise his own child than being a professional fighter. He has said he does not regret taking the drugs, and he would do it 20 more times all over again.
Although 'The American Gangster' is off the card, there have been reports that the Brazilian Vitor Belfort will remain on the card.
Where does Vitor Belfort go from here, who would you pit him against? Tweet me @JohnKingMMA.
*UPDATE: Vitor Belfort is officially off the UFC 175 card.
