The top 5- Flyweight contenders

Hey everyone over the next few weeks I'll be writing a list called the top five. This is be a top five countdown of where i believe are great moments in history or possible future or just something a have a opinion on when it comes to the sport of MMA.

This week I will start with possible flyweight contenders. Flyweight is one of the most exciting divisions in MMA. With great footwork and generally ends in a fantastic bout that most fans enjoy.  This list is a top five of potential contender for the flyweight title. These are a mixture of fighter ability and marketability. With that being said lets begin.

5. Kyoji Horiguchi (UFC ranking: 14). There are several reasons why Kyoji is a good choice for a contender down the road. The former shooto champion is usually in a very exciting fan friendly fight as his two previous UFC bouts with Dustin Pague and Darrell Montague showed. With UFC expanding TV coverage and live events around the world it is essentially that they have a marketable Asian fighter that could be a possible draw in those countries. Kyoji is one of the very few that could reach new fans in that market. Although Kyoji wrestling ability may hinder a title run this could possibly be a very fun and marketable fight for the UFC.

4. Justin Scoggins (UFC ranking: Not rated in top 15). The twenty two year old prospect may not be ranked but will be very soon. I truly believe Scoggins in the future of the flyweight division a top five fighter in the next couple years for sure. His style is very exciting with six wins by knockout which at flyweight is very rare. He recently defeated MMA veteran Will Campuzano which paved the way for many to believe he is a prospect. Unlike majority of the fighters in the flyweight division he has potentially to grow up and develop as a fighter in front of the audience since he wasn’t a big name going into the UFC, this worked with Jon Jones and this can be the same outcome.

3. Zach Makovsky (UFC ranking: 9). The fellow Bellator batamweight world champion has made a impact in the UFC. Beating Josh Sampo and Scott Jorgensen on ten days notice. The two time Fila wrestling /grappling world champion has potential to be the only person that can out grapple mighty mouse. Zach isn’t as marketable as the previous two but is much more well rounded as has potential to get the title shot sooner then later.

2. Brad Pickett (UFC ranking: 11). The eleven time zuffa veteran has only fought flyweight one time but is positioning himself as a great contender option. Brad fight style is very exciting as known by his nickname “One Punch” . This is a established UFC vet that fans already have seen fight several times. Brad a native of the UK could be there best chance to get a title which is great with there international expansion as I mentioned with Kyoji before. However the driving force behind this match up is that Brad Pickett is one of the two men that have beat mighty mouse. If Johnson retains vs. Ali at UFC 174 Pickett turns into a very interesting fight.

1. John Dodson (UFC ranking: 1). This is all dependent on him beating John Moraga. John Dodson is the best option to get a shot at the flyweight title. He has speed that makes very interesting fights as well as one punch knockout power which very few flyweights have. John Dodson already fought for the title once but it was a exciting fight that he showed a lot of potential in. Dodson is very well known he was the winner of ultimate fighter 14 in which people became emotional invested in. This is a great match for hardcore and casual fans and that is why I have ranked it number one.

Hope you enjoyed this list. Enjoy the fights this weekend. Follow me on twitter @podcastfreak
